Supervision
How I Work
I bring to my work a range of social work skills and experience that I have gathered throughout my twenty plus years of working. I use a strengths based approach incorporating your experiences of success from a range of settings and apply these to the variety of issues you bring to supervision. I use the principles of response based practice focusing on upholding dignity and recognising how you have demonstrated resistance to adversity; using this to make sense of your responses in your current situation. I also utilise interactive drawing therapy to work through your experiences in a more right/left brain mode - this can help progress to the heart of issues and provides opportunity for gaining deeper meaning.
Supervision also promotes opportunity to review how we work to achieve equity for Maori and address social justice issues. I am a skilled listener focusing on the here and now, while still attending to the bigger picture.
What You Can Expect
I offer a private space in a comfortable work room set in our garden. Be assured that what you say during supervision is kept private (unless in exceptional circumstances if there is a danger to yourself or others). You will have my focused attention and acceptance to be yourself. I model transparency, so there are no surprises as we work together.
What does being a supervisee mean
Ideally come along prepared for your supervision session - having an idea of the issues that you want to focus on. However if you are new to supervision I can work with you to identify what you may want to put on the agenda and how we can prioritise the things most important for you. Feeling safe to talk and be yourself is vital, and together we can take our time to build trust as we get to know each other. A willingness to be open and honest with yourself as an active participant means you are more likely to get the most out of your supervision time, and this will be at your pace
Using Video Conferencing for Supervision
Using video conferencing for remote supervision can have some advantages - like no lost travel time, you can work from home, and you may be able to access a bigger range of supervisors - especially if you're in a small or remote community. And, it can have a few challenges - building rapport when you're not actually in the same room, device set up, connection issues etc.
Im comfortable and experienced in offering supervision this way if it suits you better. There are however a few pointers that can help along the way....
Ideas to get the most out of online supervision
-
Find a quiet space that will minimise interruptions and distractions
-
Check your signal strength and try to ensure a good connection
-
Check your lighting and camera angle. Be mindful of your background and get your device set up before you start - camera at eye level works best
-
Mute yourself when not speaking when on a group session
-
Allow some time to log in and get organised before the session starts
-
Stay focused - avoid sending emails and texts during session (after all, you wouldn't do this in a face-to-face meeting
-
Relax and Be Yourself!
